Self Portrait Reflection

1. Why did you select the inspiration pieces?

2. Why did you select the media to create your self-portrait?
I chose to create my self-portrait with a pencil, so it would be easy to erase any mistakes I made and can redo it. I chose to sketch my portrait from one of my favorite pictures of myself that I recently had taken.

3. What challenges did you face in creating your self-portrait and how did you overcome them?
Drawing facial features was the most challenging with trying to create my self- portrait. I wanted to try and make myself look as realistic as I could, so I had to keep re- drawing my face.

4. How does this piece represent you?
This piece represents me, because its almost exactly how I look, the face is slightly larger than mine, but this is me.

5. What elements and principles of art did you apply in this work?
The main elements and principles that I concentrated on were lines, shapes, shading, and texture The whole piece includes line to give myself (face, shoulders and arms) definition. The lines and shading also added texture to my hair and my shirt. The shading helps add texture to my hair, showing individual hairs and direction/ flow of my hair.

6. Did you enjoy working on this project?
I did enjoy working on this project. It was interesting to actually have to look carefully at details of myself and things I wanted to include in the drawing.

7. What do you think of your final artwork?
Im actually very surprised with my final artwork. After re- doing it a feel times, I was able to get it the way I wanted it to look. I was surprised at my drawing skills when I actually had to try.

Critic's Report- Project 5 blog

1. Which projects did you review?

I reviewed "Full figured" by Nicholas Sessanna.

2. Why did you select the Exhibit you critiqued?

I selected this exhibit to critique because out the few I chose to consider, I enjoyed the meaning and theme behind this presentation. It was a unique topic to choose.

3. What challenges did you face in writing the critique article and how did you overcome them?

While writing this critique I was not sure how to start, and what things to concentrate on. Once I explained why I chose the exhibit, and why I enjoyed it, the ideas of things I wanted to say started to flow out.

4. How do you feel about critiquing your peers work?

I think critiquing peers work is a great thing. I enjoyed being able to really look at someone else's work, and analyze why they chose and did the things that they did, and also how they differ from what I did. Everyone interprets things differently and I have seen many variations between different exhibits. This makes everything more interesting to see, and makes me want to see more.

5. Would you like to read the critique your peers wrote about your Art Curation Project?

I would love to read what my peers wrote about my Art Curation project. I enjoyed creating the project and I put a lot of time into it, so it would be nice to see what other people have to say, and even get feedback and ideas on things I could have changed or done differently because there are plenty of ideas I did not come up with it that I saw in my peer's projects. It is nice to get others perspectives on things, thats how we learn and grow.

6. On a scale of 1-10 how would you rate your finished article and why?

I would rate my article at a 9, because I feel I did a good job at explaining things that I really enjoyed throughout the project, and I also gave him some advice on things that I would have liked to see as a viewer.

7. Did you enjoy working on this project?

I did enjoy working on this project. I learned a lot in a short time. I learned many new artists and styles. I also learned about critiquing, and how difficult it can be to be a critic and explaining your ideas on paper.

AED 200 Course Reflection

1. My expectation from the first week was that the class would teach me how to look at an art piece and be able to interpret it and understand the history behind the artwork. My expectations were definitely met.
2. I originally posted "art is esthetically pleasing to the viewer's eye, and can be an expression of one's thoughts and emotions. I still agree and like the way I defined art.
3. My favorite artist was Vincent Van Gogh, I do still enjoy his work. However my new favorite artist is Pablo Picasso. I was able to see a lot more of his work and I even used one of his pieces in my project 4 presentation.
4. I like taking online courses. I liked that I was able to work on my own pace to a certain extent. From my first post, I did not know what to expect from online classes to compare.

Project 4- Reflection of Process

I created this project by going on askART and I was able to click a topic and then further click sub-topics. I found modernism and then found the sub-group Nude painters. Nude painters jumped out at me, since I always seen a ton of paintings with nude people. I also wanted to choose something different than most people. From askART I was able to see a list of painters who have done nude paintings. Then I went onto CAMIO where I was able to search Nude painters where a ton of results came up. From there I chose paintings that appealed to me between both of the sites. Once I had all of my paintings chosen, I started to work on my powerpoint. I played around with different backgrounds. I wanted a plain background with a neutral color so it would not draw attention away from from the artwork. I can not really explain how I chose to order the paintings. I just moved them around until I liked where they were. I hope you like the final result!

Week 14/15 Video Blog

Video 1- The Lowdown on Lowbrow:West Coast Pop Art
1. This video talks about lowbrow artwork. It discusses different parts of lowbrow and the times in history that had a large influence on it.
2. The video did not really relate to my art exhibition project. Lowbrow is all over the place and unorganized with different themes. My project is one theme and all goes together.
3. From this video, I learned something new; I learned what lowbrow is and its influences however I do not feel like it added to my understanding for creating my project.

Video 2- Displaying Modern Art: The Tate Approach
1. This video talks about how museums used to be set up and how it started to change in the 1970s. It talks about Tate's thematic approach to displaying art.
2. This video did relate to my art exhibition because we have to set it up as if it were in a museum and I feel this gave me better insight and a different aspect to look at.
3. This video showed me more about museums and things to think about for setting up my project.

Video 3- Bones of Contention: Native American Archeology
1. This video talks about the question to whether Native American remains that were found should be returned to their ancestors or not. It talks about David Van Horn, Susan Harjo, new laws like Grave Protection and Repatriation Act, the value of research and the tension between scientist, historians, museum curators and Native American groups.
2. This video did not really add to my project because it discussed more of Native Americans than actual art exhibitions.
3. It really did not add to my understanding for creating my project.

Video 4- George Eastman House: Picture Perfect
1. This video shows curators and archivists at Eastman's colonial revival mansion and how it is the oldest photography museum in the world.
2. The video related to my project in the fact that it shows inside the museum in the mansion and how it looks and is set up.
3. Other than me being able to see inside the museum, I really didn't find it useful for my project. I found it interesting but I wouldnt use any of the information for my project.

Art Gallery #2

I went to the Burchfield Penney Art Gallery. I used my cell phone camera with no flash to take the pictures.

The Exhibition:
1. I did not see a title of the exhibit.
2. I also could not tell if there was a specific theme with the exhibition.

The Gallery
1. I do not know how to describe the lighting in the gallery. They were pretty bright and mostly arranged along the sides pointed at the pictures, and if there is a display in the middle a light is facing that direction.

2. The walls were mostly white in the main gallery. There was one room that had gray walls.

3. Within the art gallery there were half walls to divide of the open floor plan. There were benches within the rooms to sit down.

4. The floor plan set up a pretty smooth movement, it flowed in one direction to lead you through the gallery.

The Artwork

1. The artwork was setup in a certain way. The room had groups of drawings with paintings dividing them. On one wall there is a group of similar works from the same artist and then another group of similar drawings on the opposite wall, with a Large colorful painting dividing the two groups up. It similar on the other side of the room; there were two similar pictures and there was one Large colorful painting dividing them.

2. The artworks that were similar were all drawings with charcoal. Then paintings that divided the drawings were all similar, they used bright colors and were large.

3. The artworks were all still different. They all had different themes and subject matter within them.

4. All of the artwork had different frames. Some had layered large frames, where others only had frames along the side so you could barely tell there was even a frame on the drawings and paintings.

5. All of the paintings were identified by the artist, date and how it was created. Some artwork also included the goal the artists was aiming for with the piece.

6. The artwork were not equally spaced. They were not close to each other but not too close. Some were farther apart than others depending on shape and sizes.

Art Criticism

1. The first piece of work was called Lil Hardin and Louis Armstrong in 1927 by Theresa Bernstein. It was created by oil on canvas. With this painting, the artist uses colors, texture and emphasis to create the atmosphere. There are a lot of people within the painting and they are enjoying music together. The trumpeter is blowing a horn releasing a golden bubble of sound.I think the artist was trying to show a group of people enjoying music together and the power of music.

2. The second painting is called Blues for Charlie Parker, 1988 by Sam Scott. It was created with acrylic on canvas. This painting uses color, lines and texture to create this painting. This is a fun painting with the use of colors. It reminds me of the special paper that crayola created that creates a rainbow underneath black color to create designs.

3. The third art piece that drew my attention was Devil's Hole 1985 by Robert Lyall Flock. He created this piece with an oil stick, graphite and pastel on paper. He uses lines, colors, and shapes to create this painting. I feel he is creating the water crashing from the falls and how the light refracts from the water causing a rainbow. He makes you hear the thunder roar in which devil's hole was named.

Final Question:
By looking at the gallery with a different perspective, trying to look at the physical space, architecture and themes made the experience more interesting. It gave me something more to concentrate on that I probably wouldn't have concentrated on and those are all aspects that shape in experience with out people realizing it. Everything is set up strategically to make it more enjoyable for the patron.

I enjoy watching these videos, They all give me a better understanding by being able to see real life during these times.

Art Exploration- Mask Creation

- This is a picture of me, my mom and my friend in New Orleans with 3 examples of masks in the New Orleans culture. These masks are purple, red and blue. They were a plastic material on a wooden stick to hold. They all had glitter, jewels and feathers on them.
- These masks use texture with the use of feathers, jewels and glitter. Also, color since the masks add emphasis by drawing our attention to the face. These masks also add variety because they are all appear the same but have slight differences.
- I chose this picture as an inspiration piece because I love the masks found in New Orleans. I love the colors and the use of feathers and glitter.

- This is a mask from Bolivia. This is an interesting piece. It is a human face that has very large eyes and eyelashes, red eyebrows and colorful horns. Also, the mask uses color, alot of different colors like purple, blue/green, yellow etc. It has emphasis by drawing attention to the eyes and the horns. It uses texture by adding feathers and everything that is on the mask is on 3D. I liked this mask because it was very unique and I loved the variety in colors.

This mask is a Venetian masks. Its made from glass. It has a fabric crown with bells and is hand painted. This mask has color and it uses different shade of red, yellow and black. It has texture because the crown and collar come out from the mask and also this mask has space with the bells hanging off of it. This mask is an inspiration to me because I like the colors used and the crown. It looks very elegant.

My Mask:

With my mask I used color and texture in my finished work. I used clay to create the mask so I had mixed red, blue, green and yellow clay to get a tie-die look. I formed it to my moms face to make it 3D and you can see the texture of the clay and layers.

I enjoyed this project creating a mask. I had this idea in my mind of what I wanted to do but because I had limited resources the execution was not exactly what I planned. However I like how the tie-die came out and looks.

Here is my Sketch.

Art Exploration #4

1. It was easy to use my hand as my subject matter because I did not have to think of what to use. Also I can look at and feel my hands as much as I need to, to be able to draw them, so it was not based just on sight.

2. I chose to use a pencil because it was easier for me to hold, I could make lighter and darker lines as needed and also its easier to erase anything I did.

3. It was tough trying to actually draw with my non-dominant hand (right hand). My handwriting is not that different between my two hands because I used to use both, and depending on what I'm doing I use my right hand alot. However drawing was a different story, it was harder to make the curves I wanted to with my right hand and to make lines. However I still found this difficult to even do with my dominant hand.

4. Both pictures were rough. My dominant hand gave more detail to the outline of my hand and I could make the lines in my palm look pretty much how they actually look. However with my non-dominant hand I had straighter lines and my fingertips were more rounded. The actual difference between the two is only a slight difference.

5. Even though there was not a huge difference between my drawings, I would not use my non-dominant hand for anything in the future including artwork. It was hard to properly hold the pencil and to move it the way I wanted to.

Week 9- Video Reviews- Blog

1. I chose to watch The Drawings of Michelangelo because I enjoy his work. I also chose Leonardo da Vinci because he is one of my favorite artists. I chose to watch Albrecht Durer: Image of a Master because I really never heard of him before and I was interested in learning more. The final video I chose to watch was Velazquez growing up but I never new what it was.

2. In The Drawings of Michelangelo, it was interesting to see how Michelangelo would sketch to get an idea of the space and shapes. He was able to show volume and mass in his drawings. Since he is also a sculptor in his drawings, he makes the men looked chiseled. This video did a good job showing Michenlangelo's tools and techniques he used and how great of an artist he really was.
In the video Leonardo da Vinici, it really gave me insight into his life and how he grew to be one of the most famous artists in our history. I did not know he studied so many subjects and he really is considered a "Renaissance man".
In Albrecht Durer: Image of a master, this video really showed us how Durer was a great artist and gave me a better idea of what art was like in Northern Renaissance. He comes from a line of type of artists, his father was a goldsmith and his godfather was a publisher and printer. He had many influences in his life.
The final video, Velazquez I found interesting. I didn't even realize that Velazquez was a person until watching this video. He could really paint the emotions of the royals. He also painted Greek Mythology which was rare for a spanish artists. He ended up one of the greatest painters from Spain.

3. The videos relate to the text because they really explained the lives the artists had during the times periods we read about in the book for example middle ages with the gothic arts, early renaisaance, high renaissance etc. We were able to see the influences from the period and how the artists grew to be famous artist.

4. These films give me a greater understanding to the concepts I read about because I was able to see a different side of the artists, where they came from, how they grew up wiithin that time period and what was going on in the world at that time. It gives complemetary additional information in a more entertaining way that helps me actually see and visualize everything instead of just reading about it in a book and visualizing it in my head.

Week 7- Video Reviews

1. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
Video 1- Prairie Style
I learned about Frank Lloyd Wright and his "new" design of prairie style homes. Also, how Wright used an open floor plan which was rare for that era. Also, how Wright designed the homes based off of the elements ex: the sun follows the house throughout the day and was planned to shine in during certain time of the day.

Video 2- Architecture: The Science of Design
I learned how architects create skyscrappers and test them against wind speeds to make sure they can withstand them. I also learned how they use concrete and how they reinforce concrete since it can be brittle.

Video 3- Classical Architecture
I learned about the becoming of architecture throughout Greece and Rome, how it all was "started" as an artform. Also how they used the elements and principles within the architecture.

Video 4- Frank Gehry: Architecture as Art
I learned how Gehry evokes emotional responses from the viewers with his buildings. I liked how Gehry talked about how buildings evolve over time depending on how they have been used and taken care of, the buildings purpose; because as we previously learned that all buildings are created to serve a purpose. Frank Gehry attempts to form a connection between the buildings, culture, and art history.

2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
All of these videos give us real life examples to help us better understand what we have already read. By watching the videos we can see what we read come to life in a way and see how architecture techniques and technology have changed over time, and at the same time we still use some of the original techniques, styles.

3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of Architecture?

Similar to what I talked about in the quesiton above, The films help me better understand what I have read. While reading the text book it is hard to picture a building actually being built, how they are planned, the actually process behind it and then actually built. By watching the videos it gives me a better understanding of how architectures think and look at the buildings they create in a very artistic way. Everything they do while building has a purpose.

4. From the group of four that you had a choice: Why did you choose that film?

I chose to watch Frank Gehry: Architecture as Art, because I am interested in the art and creativity behind architecture. I love seeing original custom homes, and I find it interesting to see how an architecture creates a building that does evoke emotions and create human responses; what the logic and process is behind creating such a building.

Art Exploration #3- Installation

Reflect:

A. Installation art is a modified space in which the viewer can enter and experience the artwork.
B. There are no set materials used in installation art. An artist can pretty much use any object.
C. Artists create installations because they want to evoke feelings and emotions in the viewer. The idea of an installation is to change the space in a room to create different feelings.
D. The installation I found most interesting is from the book, Jumbo Spoons and Big Cake by Thomas Hirchhorn. Its crazy and all over the place. As a viewer I do not even know where to begin.

Plan:

A. An installation piece that gives me inspiration is Jumbo Spoons and Big Cake by Thomas Hirschhorn (like I used in Reflect: D). I like how crazy and overwhelming it is. It makes the piece more interesting.
B. The theme I decided I wanted to explore is Looking Outward: Here and Now.
C. I will use everyday materials like paper, pens but also objects I use for work like a scan gun, my computer and sign stock.
D. My installation will take place in my office at work because I have limited resources and I thought if I did it at work it could be different.

4. My installation takes place in my office at work. I have many open boxes on the computer screen, all my work is laid across my desk with a notebook, pen, pencil, my scan gun,and includes my office supplies like my phone, training binders, our drawers for the supplies. There is just stuff everywhere.
5. The elements and principles used are: Lines, every object in the picture potrays lines. Light and color, there are colors to every object used and the lighting in the office and from the computer which affects the coloring. My installation places emphasis on the computer and paperwork.
6. I wanted to create an installation with the theme Looking Outward:The Here and Now. I wanted it to feel busy and for the viewer to be able to see what a busy day at work is like. The viewer shouldn't really know where to start. I had very limited resources and I didn't know where to start. But when I started thinking that installations can be walked into and experienced which is what i do at work, so I went with that.

Week 6- Blog Video Review

1. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

In "Through the eyes of the sculpture" I learned about different types of stone and what a quarry is. It was interesting to see that there are jobs as scupltures out there, it's not like they just create sculptures for themselves that maybe put in an art museum. Its an actual job. They can be hired for restorations, they can build things like actual buidlings, bridges, fountains etc. It was interesting to see that he made impressions to be able to create a statue with deal
In "Glass and Ceramics" I learned the science on how to create glass art pieces. I didn't realize glass blowing was exactly that, blowing into a pipe with glass on the end, and it inflates the glass. I also learned that the qualitt of raw materialsused and the temperature used is what differentiates the different types of ceramics. I found it interesting that they are using ceramics in the medical field for things like hip prosthetics. Ceramics are stronger than steel and can withstand high temperatures.
In "Installation Art" I learned that an installationg is more than just a sculpture or a 3D piece. It can be many different things like a whole building or even music. These artists are manipulating space and our perceptions.

2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?

These videos relate to the readings from the text by showing real life examples and visuals of how installments, glass, ceramics and other crafts are created.

3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the topics: Sculpture, Installation, and Craft?

These films gave me a deeper understanding of artists who create sculptures, installments and crafts. The films let me visually see what I read, showing me hiow things are made and different things that artist can do with each topic.

Peer Blog Reviews

1. Hyperlink the Blogs you reviewed into your Blog

2. When looking at Project #1: (Elements and Principles), did you agree with the element or principle the artist listed with the images? Did you see other elements and principles in the images?
I agree with the images chosen to represent the elements and principles in both blogs. One example of a picture representing more than one element is in the second blog I chose by Dan Collins there is a picture of a gate for proportion which had many different elements in it including color and texture.

3. When looking at Project #2: Where there any images in the Peer Blogs the same as your own? If yes, what were they? Where the reasons the image was selected the same or different as your own?

I was not able to get to the art gallery since I was out of state, but I know I would have used Sol LeWitt's Wall Drawing as an example because this would have been amazing to see the detail in person and both students chose this piece for a similar reason.

4. Where there any images that your Peers selected that pique your interest now? If yes, what are they and what is your connection with them? What would you want to know about them?

There was an image that the first student chose that piqued my interest and that is Seamlessy Lost
it seems overwhelming because it is so large but tht is what attracts me to it, and I would love to know the bafckground information about the painting to better understand the meaning.

5. What do you think about the process of reading your peers reflection? Do you find this to be a valuable in your learning?

I found doing the peer reviews to be valuable because it gives me insight to different perceptions and ideas on artwork and I find it interesting how we all interpret things differently or similarly.

6. Check your Blog and read comments posted by your Peers. Do you find their comments helpful?

No one has commented on my blog.

AED Project #3 Logo Design

1. Discuss what you thought about creating your logo.
Its an interesting idea to come up with a logo that represents myself and is something that would "sell" or appeal to others.

2. Describe the process: creative thinking skills and ideas you used in the logo creation?
While I was trying to come up with an idea of what I thought would sum me up. I started thinking about the times when I am the happiest. I decided I wanted to do a summertime beach theme. Summer time is my favorite time of the year. I love being outside and enjoying the sun everyday. My favorite things that make me feel calm and happy during the summer is the sunset, beach and palms tree. It was interesting to see how I would sketch one logo and then each time there were little modifications that I wanted to make. My first sketch is completely different than my final sketch however, you can still see how I ended up with my final logo. Its simple, colorful, and makes me dream of summertime and beaches. It makes me happy.

3. What was the most important discovery you made in the creation of your logo?
One discovery that I made while creating my logo is that I am more creative while coming up with new ideas than I thought.

4. What is the most important information you learned from watching the videos, powerpoint, and reading material for this project? What is your opinion of the videos?
The most important thing I learned from watching the video "graphic:What's in a Logo?" is the process for a company takes to create a logo. The long process of brainstorming their ideas and creating sketches and then go from there to come up with a final result that sums up the business and is appealing to others.

Art Material Exploration #1: Exploring Value and The Subtractive Color Theory

1. I found it more difficult to create the value scale. It was difficult for me to get the shades correct box to box. I enjoyed creating the color wheel and found it interesting, however I found it difficult to get the colors dark enough to make the black color. I did not know cyan, magenta and yellow were the real primary colors.

2. I enjoyed working with the acrylic paint the best. I haven't used paints since I was a little kid, so I enjoyed doing that again and it was simple.

3. I found it interesting to learn more about the color wheel and creating it. I always wondered why in my color printer it used magenta, cyan and yellow and how they made all of the colors possible, but now I understand how those are the true primary colors. I all makes sense now.

4. The videos were very helpful because I did not know or understand what was expected for this project. After watching the videos, I understood what the value scale and color wheel should look like. I also learned where the colors have to be placed on the color wheel and which colors make what color. For example, mixing cyan and mangenta makes blue.

Project #1- Elements and Principles Blog

Some of the pictures used in my slideshow are pictures of photos I have taken in the last couple of months. In October I had gone to the Toronto Zoo, and I took some perfect pictures to use in this project. The first picture is for Harmony I had taken this beautiful picture of a patch of overgrown flowers. It was just beautiful and peaceful and I feel is a perfect example of representing harmony. Another photo is for Balance, its of two owls balancing on a tree branch, totally at ease. Another picture is for Color, its of a group of flamingos, their different color pink feathers with the relfections in the water and the green trees and brush around them add so much color to this picture. For Shape, I chose a picture of jelly fish that I had taken, you can see the shapes of square masses "inside" them and their round bodies floating around. The last picture from the zoo is of the waterfall for Rhythm. The water falling over the edge in a constant rhythm and hitting the rocks at the bottom. For Movement, I chose a picture of Hydroplane boat racing that took place in August. The boats in the picture direct your eye to follow where they are going and you see the water behind them going into the air. For Space I chose a picture that I took while they were taking the Hydroplane boats in and out of the water. In this picture the boat was hanging in the air waiting to get put in the water. For Proportion, I chose a picture of me and my boyfriend sitting on a model of the Statue of Liberty Foot, us sitting on it puts its size into perspective. For Variety I chose a picture of Time Square that I took, there are many different things going on in this picture, however it all works and fits together. It an organized chaos. For Emphasis, I chose a picture from a Disney resort. The whole picture emphasizes the structure, it pulls your eyes to the top, where you then see the water and it pulls your eyes back down. For Form, I chose a picture from a cementary in New Orleans that I took. This picture shows the form of the wall and the details of cement and brick. For Lines, I took a picture of fireworks and when I loaded it into the computer it looks like the fireworks is indeed made of lines. I though this was a very cool picture. For Texture I had taken a picture of a very different looking tree. You can see the roughness and design of the bark and roots with the leaves surrounding it. For Value, I took a picture of my friends in black and white. You can see the glare of light and shadows in portions of the picture. For Unity, I took a picture of my grandparents celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. I feel this picture is a good reperesentation of unity.

Blog #3- Colors and Emotions

1. Describe Color and it's effects on emotions. Use the appropriate vocabulary of color in your posting.

Various studeies have demonstrated that color affects a wide range of psychological and physiological responses. The color red is believed to increase appetite. Blue surroundings will significantly lower a person's blood pressure, pulse and respiration. The color "passive pink" has a calming effect on people.

2. What is a theoretical aspect of color that most intrigues/fascinates you? Why?

The theoretical aspect of color that most intrigues me is that the color red is believed to increase appetite and therefore food consumption. That is said to be why many restaurants will choose red as their main color. I had always heard that color may affect emotions and physiological responses but I never knew specifics about each color. After learning this, I had reflected on places I go to eat at and realized that most of the restaurants or fast food places I have been to, do indeed have alot of red color all around.

3. In the Color video, what made the biggest impact on you in regards to color and it's effects on emotions?

In the color video, at one point Junaw was back in London trying to paint what she saw in Venice, and she had used alot of dark reds and oranges for the building on the left with the man outside of it on the boat. When they first showed this, I felt like the left side of the painting was violent. I didn't feel good and I almost felt worried for the man on the boat in the painting. Right after that, June herself has said the same thing.

4. In the Feelings video, what made the biggest impact on you in regards to color and it's effects on emotions?

In the feelings video, Goya's paintings jumped out at me the most. The paintings from when he was in his mid 40s and later were extremely dark and "devilish." They were very scary to me, the people within the paintings looked like they were dead and trapped. The freedom was completely gone and there was no light left. These paintings had a very heavy darkness to them, and seemed to be very violent. I could feel the misery of the people withint the paintings.

Blog #2- Video Reviews

1. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
The first video did a good job discussing all of the differnet theories on aesthetics. Before reading chapter three and watching this video, I have never heard of any of these men. Reading the book and how it defined asethetics, I did not realize all of the different theories on it, aethetics and art is not written out in black and white. It takes thought in order to try and understand it and I learned more about that by Plato, Francis Hutcheson, Leon Battista Alberti, Kant, Stendhal, and Tolstoy.
In the second video, I learned about the science behind viewing art. The processes that our eyes, and brain go through in order to view art and then to try and interpret art, and then to formulate an opinion.

2. Which philosopher's theroy on aesthetics do you feel is most important? Be sure to mention the philosphers name, era (time in history), and contribtion to the aesthetic theory in your response.
The philosopher's theory that I feel is most important is Kant who is a german philosopher from the 18th century. I really his view on art. He believes that artist is not a "skilled craftsmen" but a " exceptional, sensible superior individual." I agree with this because being a true artist is a special, natural talent that not every person possess.

3. What do you think about Changeux and Ramachandran scientific view of aesthetics and art? What was the most interesting fact you discovered from each speakers lecture?
They both have an interesting view on aesthetics and art. I would have never thought about the science and biology of the human body in order to even visual and interpret artwork. I found it interesting that Changeux defined esthetic efficacy as "staggering effects on emotions and reason, mobilizing conscious and non-conscious processes." This is true in the scientific view, all of these things are happenening at one time and we do not even know it. Some of the though process we know we are doing(conscious) but then there is more to it and the brain is doing things on an unconscious level. They way he defined that, just really jumped out at me. For Ramachandran, I find it interesting that he came up with 8 laws of art/aesthetics, and they all explain how the human perspective works and the process behind it.

4. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
The first video deffinately related to the text, it went into detail on the different theories of aesthetics, and the philosophers, where the book does not go into alot of detail. The second video explained another side of aesthetics- the science behind it, which is just an interesting topic to learn about.

5. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the topics in your reading?
The first film to me was kind of boring, it had good information and added to the text. It talked specifically about the different philosophers and their views on aesthetics. However it was hard to get through the video. The second video was more entertaining, Like I said above, it touched upon the science behind being able to visualize artwork and interpret it which is pretty interesting. I have taken alot of science classes for my major, and I am just amazed by the human body and our capabilites, and watching this video deffinately added to that. When it came to art I never thought about the biology of it before that even allows us to look at and try to understand art, and formulate our own opinion. Both of these videos did add to my knowledge of art.

Introduction- Blog #1

1. How was the process of creating the GMail account and setting up the Blog?

When I purchased my new phone I was required to set up a gmail account, so I used my school username, so I already had this gmail account signed up with that name. When I originally set up the email account, I found it easy to set up, it was just difficult to find a username and password that it would accept, but it takes you step by step.

Setting up the blog was even easier since I already had the username and password set up. It walks your through step by step. It only took me about 3 minutes to set up my blogger.

2. What do you expect to learn in this course?

I expect this course to teach me how to look at an artpiece and be able to interpret it, and understand the history behind the artwork. I do not know much about art and their artist, so I expect to gain a greater appreciation for artwork.

3. How do you feel about taking an online course?

Im excited to take an online course. I like the idea of not having to attend a class however often during the week. I am pretty good with technology so i dont anticipate any problems. I am just concerned with being able to keep track of the different assignments during the week and their due dates.
